Little Witch Academia, Episode 7: Passion Counts

Luna Nova’s academic year continues and with exams around the corner, Akko willingly and boldly trudges onward, determined to overcome her shortcomings as a student of magic. This is a completely different Akko than we’ve seen before. While her determination was always prevalent, the inherent flaws in her self-absorbed approach have been exposed. No longer can she afford to ignore her lack of effort. After coming to startling revelation willingness alone is not enough to achieve your goals, she finds herself face-to-face with her lack of talent. And she’s every bit motivated to show Luna Nova she has something to offer.

Through Akko’s point-of-view, we get to experience first-hand what it means to work towards something. With exams around the corner, Akko studies hard, pays attention in class, and even takes notes on things people wouldn’t even ordinarily take notes on. For Akko, fun is just about the last thing on her mind—She wants to succeed at all costs.

But seemingly enough, nothing is changing for Akko (Well, at least on the surface). She hasn’t been able to keep up with the minimum that’s expected of her as a student: She can’t communicate with crows, she can’t make tea, and she can’t even use basic magic to open a window. Despite Akko’s best efforts to learn even the more mundane aspects of magic, the rest of Luna Nova wants to remind her she’s a talentless dunce that’s still failing all her classes. Little Witch Academia, Episode 6: There Are No Shortcuts

2017-02-14 21_01_22-[Asenshi] Little Witch Academia - 06 [4F252ECE].mkv - VLC media player

Wouldn’t it be awesome if all it took to become good at something was a magical spell with maybe some slight pleading?

No huss and fuss over mistakes, no self-tormenting over your inability to do something you so desperately want to do, just all of the glory, right from the get-go.

Well, let me and Akko know if you find it. For now, I’ll stand the belief that real life doesn’t really work that way (although it would’ve been great to have one of these magical fountains to save me from all the heartache I experienced in art school).

Little Witch Academia’s message this episode was simple and to the point: there are no shortcuts on the path to your dreams.

Those who have followed Little Witch Academia so far will undoubtedly see a contradiction to the message with Akko only managing to overcome challenges at Luna Nova through dumb stroke of luck. At this point, we’re conditioned to expect that she’ll miraculously overcome anything thrown her way, so when Akko’s setback doesn’t go as planned this episode, it’s equally as alarming for the viewer as it is for Akko.  Continue reading “Little Witch Academia, Episode 6: There Are No Shortcuts”

Little Witch Academia, Episode 5: Kick Back, Relax, and Shoot Some Dragons

2017-02-06 23_55_36-[Asenshi] Little Witch Academia - 05 [6506D1AB].mkv - VLC media player

This episode of Little Witch Academia was a lot of fun, with plenty of explosive action and comedic dialogue to get the momentum of the narrative rolling. But for as whimsical as the plot may seem—and believe me, the show revels in it—there’s some strong hints at the depths of drama the show is capable of handling.

The show persisted with its whimsical tone through the colorful cast of characters. There’s a whole lot of personality to these seemingly simple girls and it’s the small things like how they interact with their environments that reveal it. We start with an unexpected homage to the Powerpuff Girls, but with its own hilarious twist. Kagari concocts the formula with vicious delight: “Sugar, spice, and everything nice.” The cake batter erupts onto her face, covering her in a thick layer of goo. Things like Sucy taking a lick of Kagari’s failed experiment, Jasminka hounding away at a bag of potato chips, and Constanze using a microwave to show off her resourcefulness add a layer of delight to the already joyful atmosphere. They’re all characters that are awesome in their own right.

Constanze pulls out a friggin’ magic shotgun to blast dragons later on in the episode.  Amanda churns in for some playful banter, teasing Kagari’s ineptitude as a witch. She’s just kicking back and relaxing while Kagari is taking everything seriously. Their banter escalates and they inevitably find themselves at each other’s throats. Joyful music began to contrast Kagari’s plight to hint at an impending subtle drama that’s about to unfold.  There’s a lot of underlying friction between the two, but its explored and handled in consistency with the shows lighthearted feel. Little Witch Academia, Episode 4: The Adorable Dork that is Lotte

Little Witch Academia takes a detour this week from Kagari’s role as a lead to dive into Lotte’s world.  As a result, Lotte dazzled us with her command of the narrative in dweebish fashion. If you needed any convincing as to why she’s such a likeable character, then look no further than this episode. Lotte’s infectious charm is on full display.

Little Witch Academia: Episode 3 — The True Magic is in an Earnest Approach

It’s not often the case that people pursue their dreams with all that they have. After all, if it were that easy, we’d all be well-accomplished individuals. Continue reading “Little Witch Academia: Episode 3 — The True Magic is in an Earnest Approach”

Little Witch Academia: Episode 2 Review

Little Witch Academia continues its bright path with impetus, further building upon its whimsical setting with hearty humor and good fun. This episode focused primarily upon establishing the inner workings of the Witch Academy with the charming dynamic of Kagari’s silly witch trio as they go about their studies. The start of the episode was great, giving us a snippet into what exactly their daily lives as witches entails. Kagari herself is faced with some major unexpected hurdles which put her resilience to the test. With the reveal of a new prodigious rival abound and unbelievably not-so-magical classes, Kagari had her work cut out for her. This episode was even better than the first (and I had thought that it already had set the bar high). Each scene pushed forward with cohesion, as if every individual part was working in perfect harmony, seamlessly blending from one transition to the next.  Continue reading “Little Witch Academia: Episode 2 Review”
